Air Conditioning System Installation Cost Calculator
Estimate the cost of installing air conditioning in a UK home, from a single-room split system to a multi-room setup, including the new 2,500 pound air-to-air heat pump grant.
Estimated net installed cost
All figures are indicative ranges based on published UK guides and scheme documentation. Real quotes, running costs and savings vary – see the explainer and disclaimer below.
How this calculator works
This calculator works in ranges rather than single figures, because real quotes, yields and tariffs genuinely vary that much. It starts from typical UK price, output and savings ranges drawn from published 2026 industry guides and official scheme documentation, then scales them by the quantities you enter and adjusts them for each choice you make below. The result is a low-to-high band that a realistic outcome is likely to fall within, not a promise of the figure you will achieve.
A professionally installed single-room split system costs to in the UK in 2026, a multi-room multi-split to , and whole-house ducted systems to or more, with London and the South East running 10 to 25 percent above the national average. Nearly every modern system is a reversible air-to-air heat pump, cooling in summer and heating in winter at 300 to 400 percent efficiency, which is why UK demand has surged well beyond pure cooling.
Rooms to air condition
A single wall-mounted split system, one outdoor condenser and one indoor unit, typically costs to supplied and fitted. Multi-split systems run several indoor units from one outdoor condenser, which is why the per-room cost falls as rooms are added: a two to four room system typically lands at to in total. Whole-house ducted systems are a different proposition again at to or more, and suit renovations where ductwork can be hidden.
Indoor unit type
High-wall units are the standard and cheapest option, mounted above head height with short pipe runs. Ceiling cassettes and concealed ducted units look far tidier, distribute air more evenly and suit larger rooms, but cost roughly a third more per room because of the extra installation work in ceilings and voids.
Brand tier
Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric lead the UK premium segment on efficiency, quietness and reliability, typically at to for a single room, with Panasonic and Toshiba close behind at mid-range prices and Samsung and LG offering the best value. Over a 15 to 20 year life, a higher SCOP efficiency rating claws back much of a premium unit’s extra cost through lower running costs, so the energy label deserves as much attention as the price.
Where you live
Installation labour is not priced uniformly across the UK, with published guides putting London and South East quotes roughly 15 to 25 percent above the national average. Hardware prices are broadly national, so the difference sits mostly in labour, access and overheads.
Air-to-air heat pump grant
From 28 April 2026 the Boiler Upgrade Scheme extends to air-to-air heat pumps, which is what modern reversible air conditioning systems are, with a grant of where the system replaces a fossil fuel heating source. It is one grant per property, so it cannot be combined with the air-to-water grant, and cooling-only installations do not qualify. Eligibility details sit with GOV.UK and your installer, so treat the deduction here as indicative.
What else affects the figures
Running costs are lower than most people expect: an inverter unit throttles back once the room reaches temperature, so a bedroom unit costs roughly 10 to 20 pence per hour to cool at 2026 electricity prices and a summer’s typical use to per room, while in heating mode it delivers heat more cheaply than any direct electric heater. Installation must legally be carried out by an F-Gas certified engineer, servicing runs to a year, and positioning matters for both performance and neighbours, since the outdoor condenser carries permitted development noise and placement conditions. What air-to-air cannot do is heat water or radiators, so it complements rather than replaces a wet heating system in most homes.
Certification, planning and grid connection
Air conditioning installation is legally restricted to F-Gas certified engineers, since the refrigerants involved are controlled fluorinated gases, and it is a criminal offence to install or service systems without certification, so check the register before hiring. The outdoor condenser is normally permitted development on a house if it is under 0.6 cubic metres, not on a wall facing the highway and at least a metre from the boundary, but flats, listed buildings and conservation areas typically need permission and some councils apply noise conditions. From 28 April 2026, eligible air-to-air heat pump installations replacing fossil fuel heating can claim a 2,500 pound Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, one grant per property.
